“It was a big deal, but it really isn't,” he said. “As long as the team is winning, I have no problem with where my stats are.”
Boyce and senior Skye Dawson are the elder statesmen of the TCU receiving corps. They're trying to do what Jeremy Kerley, Jimmy Young, Bart Johnson and Curtis Clay did for them as newcomers.
“I try to lead by example and do everything right,” Boyce said. “When I came here, there were a lot of older guys, and they helped me out a lot. This year, it's just me and Skye. I'm trying to do what they did for me on and off the field. (The newcomers) can call me, and I'll help them out.”
Coach Gary Patterson hopes that is happening. He doesn't consider wide receiver to be that deep for the Frogs, with only eight on scholarship.
“We have five returners, but it's not deep,” Patterson said. Sophomores Brandon Carter, Cam White and David Porter all contributed in 2011. Redshirt freshmen David Bush and LaDarius Brown are also in the mix, along with true freshman Kolby Listenbee, from Arlington Bowie High School.
Boyce likes what he sees from the young guys.
“They're hard workers and they don't say too much,” Boyce said. “They're all about school and football, which is great.”
