Judge's order formalizes his decision in UNC case

Associated Press Published: September 26, 2012

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — A judge has issued an order for North Carolina to provide media outlets with unredacted documents regarding football players who committed NCAA violations for receiving improper benefits.

Superior Court Judge Howard E. Manning Jr. issued the order Wednesday, which formalizes his decision from last month. That followed a July hearing as part of a public-records fight between the university and media outlets, including The Associated Press, over information from an NCAA investigation of the football program.

Manning's order gives the university 30 days to provide unredacted documents regarding which players received improper benefits, though records involving the academic-misconduct violations were protected by federal privacy laws.

The ruling comes less than a week after former football coach Butch Davis provided records of work-related calls from his personal cellphone following Manning's decision.
