What better place to hold an art exhibit about the dramatic changes found in nature than Oklahoma. The National Weather Center at the University of Oklahoma will collaborate with the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art and the Norman Arts Council for the National Weather Biennale, a juried art exhibition scheduled to open on Earth Day 2013.

The exhibit, which will explore the theme of weather in art, is open to artists of any nationality over the age of 18. Artists may enter up to three works in any combination of categories. Deadline for submissions is Oct. 1.

A jury of members from each of the participating organizations will narrow the submissions to 100 works that will be displayed in the exhibition. Selecting the winning works will be guest jurors Christoph Heinrich, the Frederick and Jan Mayer Director of the Denver Art Museum; Spencer Finch, an American artist specializing in glass and light installations; and Jacqui Jeras, a broadcast meteorologist, formerly of CNN.

“We are extremely pleased to be working with renowned professionals in three important fields directly related to this project,” said Ghislain d'Humieres, director of the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art. “Their prominence in their respected areas of expertise is a reflection of the quality of art we expect artists all over the world to enter in the biennale.”

Artists whose works are selected for the exhibition will be notified in late 2012. The Best in Show winner will be awarded $10,000, with winners in the categories of painting, works on paper and photography to be awarded $5,000 each. The exhibit will open April 22 and remain on view through June 2 at the National Weather Center.
