RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Former Virginia governors Democrat Tim Kaine and Republican George Allen are clashing for the first time before a prime time statewide television audience over looming spending cuts, Medicare and Social Security, taxes and spending, and women's issues.
It's the fourth of five debates in the high-stakes U.S. Senate race that polls show are about even and that could determine which party will rule the Senate starting in January.
Republican Allen is taking aim at Kaine as a tax-happy liberal and pressing the contested claim that Kaine is willing to let the military absorb deep cuts.
Kaine is accusing Allen of supporting a voucher system for Medicare and favoring abortion restrictions that could curb women's access to contraceptives.
AARP and the League of Women Voters are sponsoring the hourlong debate.
