Keep gun laws local
I was a weapons instructor for the U.S. Army for 14 years. I've fired virtually all weapons used by police and military up to 2001. I don't own an assault rifle (my choice) but I respect the rights of those who do. Registration of firearms should be done locally. The federal government shouldn't mandate this. Instead it should pass a law that gives the local district attorney the power to file charges against a family member responsible for allowing a mentally disturbed person access to firearms belonging to that family and doing little or nothing to keep him away from them.

This is the key to gun control. It's a family thing and a local police job to assist in the control of who gets access to the weapons. I support background checks and if a person who's a felon gets a gun by means of a yard sale, or an estate sale, the person who sold him the gun should be held responsible. Too many people see a weapon as a bad thing and don't teach their kids what to do if they should “find” a gun.
Let's use common sense and trust the good people who collect guns as a hobby or sport.
