Keeping things cool: Church offers heat relief

With temperatures soaring in the triple digits these days, one downtown Oklahoma City church is offering a way to beat the heat. First United Methodist Church of Oklahoma City recently set up a “Cooling Station” outside its building at 131 NW 4.
The Rev. Mark McAdow, the church's senior pastor, said the station was the idea of a church member who thought it would be nice to offer cool water and a shady place to rest near the busy corner of NW 4 and Robinson where the church is located.
McAdow said downtown workers, the homeless and people visiting the Oklahoma City National Memorial are among the individuals who frequent the corner, along with various passersby.
He said last week, the church placed large umbrellas atop the permanent picnic tables on a small plaza on the church's south side. McAdow said church member Richard Bradley volunteered to hand out ice water to those who see the church's new “Cooling Station” sign and request it some liquid heat relief.
McAdow said the cooling station, set up from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday, is just another simple way the church is showing its love for others.
“We had a dozen or so folks come by,” he said of the ministry effort's first week.
Bradley said about 14 people each day accept the cool cups of water he patiently distributes and some sit at the picnic tables for a brief rest. He said offering the respite is his way of ministering to the needs of others.
