A controversial moment in Game 1 came with 1:05 remaining when Thunder point guard Russell Westbrook attempted a 12-foot jumper that hit the front iron and crawled around the rim.
The ball was tipped in by OKC center Kendrick Perkins to give the Thunder a 102-101 lead. The ball still appeared to be on the cylinder, and Perkins' hand went through the net, which would be goaltending.
The play took place in front of the Denver bench, and the Nuggets immediately protested for a goaltending call that never came.
”The ball is not even outside the cylinder,” Denver coach George Karl said. “It doesn't even get outside the cylinder.”
Asked what he observed on the play, Westbrook said: “I just thought it was a great tip-in. it was a great job by our bigs crashing the glass and tipping the ball. They worked hard all game getting offensive rebounds and that was a good time to get one.”
