MVP: DID YOU KNOW?

Some things you might not have known about the NBA MVP voting:

•Kevin Durant came within six votes of a unanimous selection. That’s not the record. Shaquille O’Neal in 2000 got 120 out of 121 first-place votes. Allen Iverson received the other.

•In the last eight seasons, the MVPs have spent a collective two seasons in college. Derrick Rose spent one year at Memphis, Durant spent one year at Texas.

•Durant becomes just the second NBA MVP from a Big 12 or Big Eight school. Wilt Chamberlain of Kansas won four MVP trophies in the 1960s.

•Durant is the first MVP from the Western Conference since the Lakers’ Kobe Bryant in 2008.

•Durant wins the Maurice Podoloff Trophy. Podoloff was a U.S. lawyer who became an administrator in professional basketball and hockey. He served as NBA commissioner from the league’s 1946 founding as the Basketball Association of America until 1963.

•Allen Iverson (2001) is the only MVP to play fewer than 75 games. He played in 71.

•Magic Johnson in 1990 is the only MVP winner who didn’t receive the most first-place votes. Charles Barkley had more first-place votes that season.

•Only five MVPs failed to get a majority of the first-place votes: Julius Erving in 1981, Johnson in 1989 and 1990, Karl Malone in 1999, Tim Duncan in 2002 and Steve Nash in 2006.

•Only one player was awarded MVP while scoring fewer than 20 points a game — Nash in both 2005 and 2006.

•Only three MVP winners were on teams that won fewer than 55 games (adjusting for the shortened 1999 and 2012 seasons) — Moses Malone in 1982, Michael Jordan in 1988 and Nash in 2006.
