NORMAN — Looking over Norman North's roster, 6-foot-3, 210-pound linebacker Jordan Evans is probably not the guy you'd pick when you desperately need a long, weaving kickoff return.
But when he scooped up a line-drive kickoff at his own 10-yard line, Evans fell in behind his blockers moving left, cut back across the field at the perfect time, and was finally brought down at Norman High's 19-yard line.
For a guy who will make a ton of big plays at linebacker this season, it will be hard to top the kickoff return that set up the Timberwolves' game-winning touchdown in a thrilling 30-20 victory in the Crosstown Clash on Thursday at Gaylord Family—Oklahoma Memorial Stadium.
“The guys that block for me made the crease,” Evans said. “All I did was run with the ball, and run as fast as I can.”
Of course, the kickoff return was only the setup. Quarterback Channing Meyer, who split time with Peyton Gavras all night long, finished the job with a 19-yard touchdown run one play later. That put Norman North ahead 24-20 just 30 seconds after Norman had retaken the lead on Zach Long's fourth-down TD pass to Jakcob Dean.
And if the final 90 seconds hadn't been wild enough, Norman North's Beau Proctor capped it with a 60-yard interception return as time expired. Near midfield, Norman tried to set up a trick play on the final snap, but Proctor undercut the throw and headed to the end zone to meet his teammates for a celebration under the goal post.
