The 9-year-old's pizza creation became part of his lunch that day at the Bethel Foundation's Kids Rock Camp.

The camp was created for children who live in households headed by a single mother. Bethel Foundation founder Lynda Powell said Giavoni and 19 other youths learned about nutrition, hygiene and safety at the recent weeklong, half-day camp at Britton Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), 922 NW 91.

Powell, once a single mother herself, said the camp aims to help single moms, many of whom are stretched thin by a multitude of stresses. The camp teaches children important life lessons.

"We want to teach them to be helpful, independent and make good, healthy decisions because they're probably home alone sometimes,” Powell said.
