Kids’ toy whale really rocks
PROJECT OF THE WEEK

Like zebras, penguins and panda bears, orcas (or "killer whales”) are irresistible to kids. That’s because their distinctive black-and-white markings make them instantly recognizable, giving this familiar favorite a prominent position in any child’s menagerie.

If you’re a do-it-yourselfer with a child or grandchild who loves killer whales, this rocking version will be the hit of the holiday. Best of all, you can make it in a couple of weekends for less than $50. The secret is plywood. The entire project is cut from a single sheet.

To build, simply trace the project’s full-size patterns onto the plywood and cut them out. Laminate the pieces together (glue, clamp and allow to cure) to achieve the necessary thickness. The laminated construction makes the project less expensive but much stronger than the equivalent dimensional lumber, plus it’s easier to work with.

Once the pieces are cured, sand everything, paint according to the included guide and assemble using glue and screws. Once the glue’s dry, your whale is ready to rock.

The rocking whale measures 43 inches long by 16 inches wide by 25 inches tall.

The Rocking Whale plan, No. 913, is $9.95 and includes step-by-step instructions with six photos, full-size traceable patterns, construction diagrams, a cutting layout, complete shopping list, cutting schedule and a toll-free telephone number to call with project questions.

A package of four rocking toy projects, No. C73, is $24.95 and includes plans for two rocking horses, a rocking airplane and a rocking dinosaur. Please include $4 for postage and handling. Allow about two weeks for delivery.
