YUKON — Never underestimate the power of the underdog, at least that’s the mantra Kingfisher will carry into the Class 2A state championship game after beating Millwood 27-12 Saturday night at Yukon Stadium.
Kingfisher will face Lincoln Christian in the finals Saturday at Boone Pickens Stadium. The task for Kingfisher’s defense was large – slow down the Millwood duo of quarterback Kevonte Richardson and tailback Emilio Gatewood. Kingfisher did just that, limiting Richardson to just 75 yards in the air and another 12 on the ground. Gatewood, who had rushed for at least 125 yards in each of his last 10 games, was corralled effectively, finishing with 97 yards. But 22 of that came late in the fourth quarter. "We practiced hard all week and we played hard,” linebacker Rhett Blundell said. "We never let up. We knew they were dangerous, but we prepared well.” Quarterback Derek Patterson finished with 182 yards and two touchdown passes. He knew despite winning 11 games this year, most folks figured Millwood would win. "Nobody gives us a shot to beat Sperry, we beat them,” Patterson said. "Then they say we’ll lose to Millwood and we beat them. We don’t mind it.” As great as Patterson played, Kingfisher got through Saturday night by shutting down the Falcons’ offense.
