Former college basketball coach Bob Knight will call games

Although former Texas Tech coach Bob Knight has expanded his role at ESPN to include game analysis, don’t call him a media member. A longtime media critic, he’s quick to protest.

"I’m a coach who is talking about basketball,” Knight said in a conference call Wednesday. "I don’t consider myself in any way a member of the media.”

Knight, the winningest coach in Division I men’s basketball with 902 victories, doesn’t even consider broadcasting to be his next career move.

"My post-coaching career is fishing,” he said. "Working with basketball is a hobby that I attach to fishing.”

After joining ESPN as a studio analyst late last season, Knight told ESPN vice president Norby Williamson that he preferred game broadcasts over studio work. This season, he’ll do both. He will broadcast weekly Thursday night games with Brent Musburger, beginning Jan. 15, and select nonconference games with Dan Shulman.
