→Season story line:
If not for Connecticut, Stanford would be the talk of the women’s basketball world. The Cardinal lost to the Huskies in the national championship game a year ago and suffered its only loss of the season against UConn in December.
Jayne Appel doesn’t lead the Cardinal in scoring or rebounding — that would be Nnemkadi Ogwumike — but the senior center makes Stanford go. When Appel was in foul trouble in the Elite Eight, the Cardinal became vulnerable.
Jeanette Pohlen’s last-second heroics gave Stanford a 55-53 victory against Xavier. The Cardinal weathered foul trouble from Appel and an off night by Ogwumike to advance to the program’s ninth Final Four.
Tara VanDerveer is among the legends in women’s basketball. She is only eight wins shy of 800 career victories, and she led Stanford to a pair of national titles in the early ’90s.
