Knox County senior centers getting defibrillators

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — All Knox County senior centers will soon be receiving automated external defibrillators that can help patients in cardiac arrest through a donation by Covenant Health.

County Mayor Tim Burchett and Covenant Health representatives will be at the Carter Senior Center on Wednesday to present one of the newly donated units to the facility.
An AED is a computerized device that provides an electric shock to get a patient's heart rhythm back to normal during cardiac arrest. The devices are easy to use and provide prompts to instruct the user.
The American Red Cross says the AED units are the only effective treatment for restoring a regular heart rhythm during sudden cardiac arrest.
