WARSAW, Poland (AP) — The residents of Krakow have taken a vote on whether they want the city to bid for the 2022 Winter Olympics, amid general hostility toward the costly project.
Some 580,000 residents of the southern Polish city were eligible to vote in Sunday's local referendum held at the same time as the elections to the European Parliament. The results are expected on Monday.
A recent survey showed that some 58 percent of Poles are against Krakow holding the games.
Krakow proposes to hold the games together with Slovakia, across the border. Their bid is competing against those from Almaty, Kazakhstan; Beijing; Lviv, Ukraine; and Oslo.
The International Olympic Committee will choose the host city on July 31, 2015, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
