Kansas and Kentucky are the leaders in the basketball recruiting battle for Daniel Orton.

Orton had listed Kentucky as his leader, but the Bishop McGuinness forward on Monday said Kansas has joined the Wildcats atop his list. Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Ohio State are the other programs on Orton's final list.

Orton took an official visit to Kansas last weekend and was on hand as the 2008 NCAA championship team received its rings.

"My favorite part (of the visit) was hanging out with the players,” said Orton, who has no timetable for his decision but will likely announce on one of ESPN's family of networks.

Orton is ranked No. 10 on the ESPN 100, No. 12 on the Scouthoops Top 100 and No. 22 on the Rivals Top 150. He averaged 13.7 points, 11.2 rebounds, 5.2 blocks and 2.8 assists per game as a junior.

The 6-foot-11, 260-pounder has hosted Kentucky's Billy Gillespie, Kansas' Bill Self, Oklahoma's Jeff Capel and Oklahoma State's Travis Ford during in-home visits this month.

Orton said he expects to take an official visit to Kentucky on Oct. 9 and will likely return to Kansas on Oct. 17. Orton has visited Oklahoma and Oklahoma State on multiple occasions and has no plans to make an official visit to either school.

I used to work with his dad and his dad is a very good man. I think he'll have him squared away and he's very active in this recruiting process. From what I've talked with his dad, I doubt he'll be picking Oklahoma schools. Sad deal that we loose our in-state talent, but I wish him the best of luck.

Chris, no I did not have any relatives in that game. Just have been a fan of basketball since playing several years ago in New Mexico and coaching there. Would have been nice though to have someone still playing.

UK is on a little of a decline, but if you are a great player you can make the team better. Orton has stated several times he wants to play in front of an active, packed, loud crowd. If that is the case, OU is not the best fit for him. He has said he will be watching to see if OU can pack it out and then he might reconsider them. I think he will go to Kentucky.

You guys really think you know what's best for this kid's future, how ignorant...to say OU would be the best fit for him or that he's a Cowboy is silly, take out your school bias and read the article headline: "KU, Kentucky top Orton's list"...Todd and Justin, you guys are right on top of this story, geniuses.

Chris I witnessed the same thing in the Finals. It goes to the coaches who have let him have his way. Granted, he is one of the best big men in the state if not the best, but if his past coaches, from grade and middle school and along with high school did not give into him whenever he was unhappy with either his minutes on the court or playing style of the team, he would have either quit the game or have already had the mental attitude I eluded to previously instilled in him. No one person is above the team although from a coach's standpoint, that one person might keep him from losing his job or winning a state championship.

I agree FRANK...I saw him throw a temper tantrum at last year's final - gave the coach a nice glare. He needs a spanking.

Kentucky???? That program is on the decline and will be for years. Arkansas is a superior program to Kentucky. OU is better than Arkansas and Kansas would be the best. OU would be the best fit for this young man.

After watching Daniel develop for several years, I hope he can obtain the mental discipline to play at a higher level. He has the tools to reach his goals. Now all he needs is the correct attitude which has been lacking at times.
