LAFD probes response in teen soccer player death
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles Fire Department officials have announced an investigation of the death of a 16-year-old boy who died at a hospital soon after paramedics took 15 minutes to arrive at a middle school soccer field where he had passed out during a game.
LAFD Chief Deputy of Emergency Operations David Yamahata said at a news conference Friday that multiple 911 callers gave conflicting addresses for Wilmington Middle School on Sunday. That led paramedics to respond to an incorrect address, and another response team had to be dispatched to the school. Yamahata says they followed protocol after arriving.
Battalion Chief Armando Hogan says firefighters are trained to respond to addresses rather than landmarks like schools or parks because that can breed confusion, but says this investigation could bring policy changes.
