Lake Thunderbird in Norman hosts activities Saturday

An open house at the Lake Thunderbird Boathouse, free rides on sailboats and Turtle Day at the Discovery Cove Nature Center are among activities planned Saturday at Lake Thunderbird in Norman.

A sailing club open house and Turtle Day at the Discovery Cove Nature Center are among activities planned at Lake Thunderbird on Saturday.

The Thunderbird Sailing Club will offer free sailing on a variety of boats ranging from 15-foot racing dinghies to 30-foot cruisers at the club's annual open house from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Thunderbird Boathouse on Indian Point Road, one-third mile north of where Alameda Street ends in Thunderbird State Park.

Additionally, a hot grill will be available for guests to use, and the swimming beach will be open.

Lake visitors also are invited to Turtle Day at the Discovery Cove Nature Center, which is off State Highway 9 on Clear Bay Boulevard.

Naturalist Kathy Furneaux will lead a discussion about Oklahoma turtles at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Children ages 4 and up are invited to participate in turtle crafts at 11:30 a.m. Turtle feeding time will be at 5:30 p.m., featuring the five kinds of turtles that reside at the nature center.

Lake Thunderbird also offers picnic and camping sites, swimming beaches and hiking trails.
