Lakes in Oklahoma City metro area may fill to the brim

Metro-area officials say they expect more people to stay in the area this Memorial Day weekend.

"This weekend with the economy the way it is, people are taking ‘staycations,’ that’s the buzzword right now. They’re not traveling as much, so we really feel like we’re going to get some really good use out of our lakes,” said Jennifer Lindsey-McClintock, Oklahoma City parks spokeswoman.

A tornado hit a boat dock May 13 at Lake Stanley Draper, but the new lake facilities were spared. The pavilion, sand volleyball area and playground that opened in October are ready for use.

Lakes Hefner and Overholser will be available for boaters, she said.
