The grant was announced Tuesday morning during a news conference at the university’s Oklahoma City campus, 4205 N Lincoln Blvd.

The grant, funded through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, will allow university officials to initiate economic development projects in Langston and the empowerment zone in Oklahoma City, program director Linda Tillman said.

The funds will be used to build a softball field at T.G. Green Park, expand the Business Resource and Incubator Center in the Langston Retail Plaza, and host foreclosure and housing seminars, job placement programs and counseling programs, university spokeswoman Ashley Gibson said.

University officials also will use the funds to create gardens and promote neighborhood associations in Oklahoma City’s empowerment zone in the downtown area, she said.
