Police have been told Feed The Children founder Larry Jones authorized putting hidden microphones in the offices of three top executives, The Oklahoman has learned.

Oklahoma law makes it a felony to willfully use or endeavor to use an electronic device "to intercept any oral communication.” It also is illegal to procure someone else to do it or endeavor to do it. Punishment is up to five years in prison and at least a $5,000 fine.

Jones told others his actions weren’t illegal.

Oklahoma City police became involved Aug. 19 after a private investigator found "remnants of wiretapping devices” in the ceilings of three offices, a police report shows. The private investigator was hired by the charity to sweep for electronic "bugging” devices at the Oklahoma City headquarters.

A police inspector met with Oklahoma County District Attorney David Prater and his top assistant, Scott Rowland, on Wednesday. Prater said he has asked for further investigation "regarding specific issues.”

Jones and his attorneys declined comment.

At issue is whether Jones intended to record only his own conversations with the executives. In Oklahoma, secretly recording one’s own conversations is legal. Bugging offices to eavesdrop on others is illegal.

Jones has made the Christian relief organization recognized nationwide through his pleas in television commercials for funds to feed hungry children. The charity reports it collects more than $1 billion in donations a year.

The three executives are Jones’ daughter, Larri Sue Jones, general counsel; Travis Arnold, chief operating officer; and Christy Tharp, chief financialofficer.

Jones has been at odds with those executives and most of the charity’s board of directors over who was really in charge of the organization. Last December, Jones had the executives fired. A judge reinstated the executives months later.

Police were told Jones authorized bugging the executives’ offices after the judge gave the executives their jobs back. Police were told installers put in the hidden microphones April 4, a Saturday, just before the executives returned to work. The Oklahoman learned some details of the police investigation from multiple sources familiar with it.

Installing microphones
The charity’s then-vice president of information technology, Jerrald Buchanan, contacted Travis Voice & Data, an Oklahoma City company, to install the microphones and a recorder. The company’s owner, Greg Mantia, talked with police Sept. 9. He told police his employees never could get the recorder to work and the microphones had been removed. He also told police Buchanan explained that Jones wanted to be able to turn the devices on and off so Jones could record conversations only when he was in the executives’ offices.

Mantia also told police he talked with Jones in September after The Oklahoman reported police had begun an investigation. Mantia told police Jones commented that he didn’t intentionally commit any wrongdoing.

Mantia hired Mack Martin, a criminal defense attorney, before talking with police.

"We have cooperated 100 percent with police and will continue to cooperate in this ongoing investigation,” Martin said.

The attorney said Travis Voice & Data is a big supporter of law enforcement statewide and helped the attorney general create the state’s "No Call” list.

"They haven’t done anything wrong,” Martin said. "The representation was that what they were doing was lawful because it was authorized by Larry Jones and the recordings were to be done in a lawful manner.”

The charity’s directors fired Buchanan in May over other issues. He is suing over his termination. His attorney in the civil lawsuit has contacted police to set up an interview.

"We believe that Larry Jones is the person who authorized any equipment to be installed,” Buchanan’s attorney, Mark Hammons, said. "We believe that it was always intended solely to record conversations which he was a party to, which is not unlawful, even if it’s surreptitious and no notice is given.”

The attorney said he can understand how Jones might have thought there was a necessity to record his own conversations because of the serious internal fights within Feed The Children.

"The bottom line is he does have the legal right to do that,” Hammons said.

Feed The Children is conducting an internal investigation. The board of directors could discipline Jones, even if prosecutors decline a criminal charge. Jones in August gave up operational control of the charity as part of a settlement of the legal dispute over who was in charge.

The private investigator who made the discovery in August told The Oklahoman microphones had been removed but cables remained hidden just above the ceiling tiles. He said the cables led back to a phone room where a recorder could have been set up for conversations.

At the risk of repeating the obvious (as already pointed out), if Larry Jones really wanted to record only conversations to which he was a party, the logical solution would have been a recording device carried on his person. Going to the added expense and logistical effort associated with placing hidden listening devices in the other executives offices really makes no sense if all he cared about were his own conversations with said executives.

I never gave this organization a dime, so count me out. BTW, did you and cletus ever have the time to get those warts checked?

Well jeez Robert that is sweet, why no harsh words for the real evil doers? The Larry Jones family who claim to be righteous and upright but are nothing worse than money whores. I do feel bad for those employees because they were LIED and decievied by a man and his minions, oh much like our current president has lied to us. Which pill am i taking tonight? The blue or the red, are you willing to look down the rabbit hole and see the evil doers and call them out or just make lame ass excuses for them. I will pray for these people and of course not all the employees are not money whores like Larry Jones and family (today). Maybe he will seek true forgiveness and straighten himself out, I hope so for his and his family's soul.

I personally know employees, past and present at FTC, and they are the real angels. Please don't lump them in with Larry because they happen to share the same business address.

I started knowing of Brother Roloff when I was kid....funniest thing, now that I am 59 yrs old,his hair is darker now than then.

The price of the devices and their installation sure could have fed a lot of children!

He's a crook.

He looks like a crooked snake oil salesman.

I stated in an article concerning this organization 3 months ago to "look for indictments" and it appears we're getting closer to seeing them.

Another crooked okie, hiding behind the cloak of "bible thumping and Christianity" duping thousands of you idiots, playing you like utter fools.

One last thought. If Larry is telling the truth and all he wanted to do was record his own conversations with the 3 key officers he "bugged"-why didn't he just put a recorder on his own phone and/or carry a concealed tape recorder with him when he was in meetings with them?

To me, the AG, needs to look closely at Larry's "intent" not just what he wants us to believe.

Jeez this is pretty straight forward. I used to believe in Larry Jones but do not anymore. It is what it is, no morality among those that call themselves moral. Further appears that the Jones's have more of a love for money than for God. This is the fruit they bear. I hate to hear and see this but dont give to this organization and the fruition of their cause appears to be making money for the Jones's rather than doing what the true living God wants. Stay away from these evil doers. Their hearts are NOT in the right place, their hearts are in their pocketbooks and with power. Not very good combination. God blesses those that are true to His word and these folks are degenerates or have moved into that area, its sad, I hope they realize their sin and get back to the basics. Otherwise this is what they reap.

I posted the comments about Larri-Sue and I stand by them. My heart aches for the people who go to FTC day in and day out. These folks go there praying the work they do everyday positively affects the lives of countless people around the world (it does). These people have been targeted by an incompetent board as even more incompetent leadership. My criticism is equally wielded to all of the Joneses, the entire board of directors and upper-management. The real story of FTC can be found in the proud stories of the workers. Let us talk about the people that have been terminated, unlawfully accused of misconduct, suspended, and had their meager paychecks withheld. You may assume if someone has been terminated or suspended it is with good reason, well you are wrong. Those ladies in the accounting department were suspended for uncovering wrong-doing by the CFO. Has anyone forgotten Larry Jones fired her initially for incompetence? HELLO!!!?? Statute of limitations for delinquent taxes?? I am not putting my head in the sand about all of the mismanagement while Larri-Sue was in high school. I am saying she is creating a living hell for any employee at FTC that showed any support for Larry Jones during the last year. It is despicable that 5 out of 10 people who spoke against the problems of FTC to the board of directors over the past year have been fired. The other 5 have seen false disciplinary action. This all makes me sick. I am no fan of Larry or Larri-Sue, make no mistake.

Let's see, on March 9, 2009 JUDGE PARRISH reinstated the original Board and the executives fired by the "new" board. Larry's coup had failed and from then on Larry was legally accountable to the original board. Then on April 4, 2009 Larry put the "wire-taps" into the offices of the 3 reinstated officers.

Logic tells me that Larry did this without approval of or knowledge of the Board to whom he was accountable. To me, this shows Larry's total disrespect for the legal authority of the Board and his historic lack of accountability to their authority.

It is quite reasonable to assume Larry intended to "spy" on the officers and also "spy" on their conversations with the Board of Directors.

Wonder if Larry's lack of respect for the Board goes without discipline from them.

Still think some other "respectable" non-profit needs to "take over" control of FTC otherwise FTC cannot survive.

To the person posting-"scoundrel Larri-Sue"-I appreciate your point of view but please realize the mis-management/lack of accountability within FTC by Larry was going on when LarriSue was in high-school. LarriSue certainly didn't set-up her brother Allen in Elkhart, Indianna. She certainly did not set up the golfer Lee Jansen with a $250,000/year "deal" to wear FTC t-shirts. I could go on and on but please understand, Larry Jones made all the decisions. Maybe, it's just possible, LarriSue has been attempting to "fix" things at FTC for the truly needy rather than hurt her parents.

Time will tell and I suspect it will be rather quickly. The IRS has got to be in the middle of all this so hold on to your hats.

When will people wise up and stop giving to this ponzi scheme that mainly benefits Jones. There are plenty of real charities out there that do good work without making the founder a multi-millionaire. Let me say this so that even republicans will get it... FTC is a scam operation and Larry Jones and his family are crooks.

As I recall, 'for profit' organizations are not subject to the public disclosure required of non-profits...

the ftc trucking firm is illegal. it operates under the guise of one entity ,yet is funded by another. i worked for this company and i brought in many high end contributions, cars, jewelry, paintings etc, that was never sold and given to charity. i could not work for that company when i found out the truth.
i took clothing donations to an indian reservation . i was appalled at what they packed for these kids. high heel shoes, adult prom dresses, and a john deere tractor. the leaders of the tribe wanted me to load the stuff back up and throw it in a dump. the tractor would not even run.
the next thing i did was send hay to starving cows in montana . the hay was wheat straw. they had all the news channels film this. not one person brought up the fact that animals can't eat wheat straw.

so i quit. they never paid me my last 4 weeks wages.....i had to go to channel 9 to get attention. they gave me 1 week.

Isn't FTC set up as a 'for profit' organization?
Kevin, Oklahoma City - Nov 1, 2009 at 8:35 am
I have been watching coverage of this story like it is a daytime soap opera. It is too bad real and innocent lives are being affected and hurt by this foolishness. It seems like folks in OK are very quick to attack Larry Jones and a villan. I just wonder what actions we would take if we discovered our power-hungry, selfish, greedy daughter were working behind the scenes to steal and tarnish the very thing we had worked our entire lives to build. This scoundrel Larri-Sue says she is trying to save the charity her parents founded but she has destroyed her family in the meantime. That is the real tragedy. In the meantime, good-hard working people at FTC, regular folks like you and I, are being fired and suspended and losing their very modest income while the Jones' fight with a spoiled selfish child. Let us not forget the mission of "feeding children" is also suffering.

Cracka, OKC - Nov 1, 2009 at 5:46 am
Here's my post from August when the "wire-tap" came to light.

"Hey Steve-Check out Gary Waits and Waits Investigations on Google-they are "pros". Entire building has been occupied for over 20 years by FTC. And, I wouldn't use the word-STRANGE I'd use the word-FELONY. Leads one to ask-"who had the motive "AND" the opportunity "AND" the authority to do such a thing?" Also, since the "old board" and previously "fired" key employees authorized the search, can't imagine why they'd do so if they had "bugged" the place."
Bill, denver - Aug 23, 2009 at 1:12 pm"

Sorry to say this but to believe Larry "turned-on", "listened to" or "recorded" ONLY the conversations he was a party to is terribly NAIVE!

There are many reasons I say this but for example, remember that Larry sent his guy from OKC to LA to perform a "residential robbery" (police statement) in the home of his daughter LarriSue when he knew she was in OKC to be "fired". BTW-Larry's "guy" took her computer and her files.

For the police/DA to prove other-wise however will likely be difficult to prove.

I'm very sad to say that this "bugging" is, in my opinion, just one of the multiple legal mis-deeds the OKC police, Michigan legal authorities, Oklahoma County DA, Oklahoma Attorney General, multiple DA's and AG's from other cities and states will be investigating over the coming months possibly years.

Unfortunately Larry and Madoff have WAY to much in common.
