Okla. Latino groups praise HB 1804 injunction

Published: June 9, 2008

Latino groups are praising a federal judge's decision to block enforcement of parts of a state law that targets illegal immigrants.

The Rev. Victor Orta of the Coalition of Latin American Ministers said Monday that momentum against the law, House Bill 1804, is building. Orta says the law sends a negative message that immigrants aren't wanted in Oklahoma.

Franco Cevallos of the Hispanic Action Coalition says Latino workers are good for the state's economy. Without them, Cevallos says, building projects have been slowed or stopped and stores have closed.

On Wednesday, U.S. District Judge Robin J. Cauthron issued a preliminary injunction prohibiting enforcement of provisions of the law that subject employers to penalties for failing to comply with a federal employee verification system.

One last thing, if the state didn't start off allowing illegals to work, think the economy would be dropping? We would see "no change" instead. Hire drug lords and watch when they get busted, drop in economy would also happen. They are now condoning breaking the law.
Parthina, Oklahoma City - Jun 10, 2008 at 2:42 pm
ps. for those who didn't know, we've lost several hundred acres to illegals already who cried post pardum depression (spelling?). A whole ranch and they were illegals and still were illegals when they won the ranch that is on US soil. No sir, I don't like it. And I also know someone who got in a wreck with an illegal, lost their car and was injured. Guess who paid the bill? Guess who got to go free? You guessed it!
Parthina, Oklahoma City - Jun 10, 2008 at 2:40 pm
I disagree with the article's comment that the law sends a message that immigrants aren't wanted. It's sends the message that we don't allow folks to break the law. The law is what it's about. B & E. If we broke into someone's house, what would happen? If we insisted on staying and demanded medical attention and rights, what would happen? How about just changing the family values of the home?? Telling the residents that the primary language spoken in front of them will be spanish. Even the signs. This state is changing, including language on signs. I welcome them if they come here for America's ways but not to have a Mexihoma. We speak english! Teach your kids English, speak english out of respect. Adapt to our culture. If I wanted to see Mexico, I'd go there. I don't want it here. I don't mind the people that are legal coming for a new life.. But I desperately hope they stop cramming their ways down our throats. Illegals should have NO rights on US soil. There's not enough laws here to protect us from illegals. Look at our insurance, if we get hit we are SOL and they go free. NOT COOL. America, open your eyes to the right way to handle this. Talk about backwards, I think even I could do better with this one and I'm not politically inclined.
Parthina, Oklahoma City - Jun 10, 2008 at 2:35 pm
It's not Methamphetamine mainly from the Mexican side...But a worse drug named "cheese" a form of Heroin so addictive and deadly, one hit and your KID is another statistic...

k, i feel for you that your kids could not do better in life than become security guards. dont you think the mexicans are bringing the coke, heroin, and marijuana. meth doesnt have the profit margin. why cant you buy sudafed and other over the counter drugs anymore? o yeah BECAUSE THEY MAKE IT HERE!! your kids arent protecting me. they are losing a war that can not be won. both you and dee just believe whats easy for you to digest. focusing on the problems rather than looking for a solution. and dee like i said before "and as i understand itat least businesses ive run payroll for in the past, those folks were all paying taxes. federal and state. as well as contributing for medicaid and social security. they take the jobs that our own meth head citizens wont work. if you need proof go ask most lawn services, construction crews, roofing crews, hell they even work for the state, and city. not hard to produce an i.d., and a fake social card. then renew it every time ice comes a knocking. i really dont even think you have a dog in this fight, and if gay marrige was legal, you would be asking terrill out on dates." and yes dee im finally glad you can admit the being mexican doesnt equal a DUI. your showing some growth. at a girl!
Randy, Moore - Jun 10, 2008 at 12:16 am
My husband is in agriculture and has a labor intensive business. He doesn't mind the e-verify system and he has never had to hire anyone that was illegal. If Meth doesn't come from Mexico, then why are they having such intense drug wars that the Mexican army has been called in to fight against them? Maybe the drugs are just Marijuana??? Oh, I get it Randy, they only break the law to get here and then illegals become good, hardworking, and law-abiding because the rest of the legal Oklahomans are just meth heads. I really think there are many people, legal and illegal, that are hard working people in Oklahoma. While employers are hiring what you call "brown skinned people" who are illegal, the taxpayers are being forced to subsidize these illegals with our tax dollars when they need medical care, can't work, etc. Simply put, the employer only pays a wage, no benefits, no insurance...taxpayers pick up the tab. Illegals can't sue you and they won't ask for benefits. That's really what it all boils down to isn't it? PS I'm glad you know that DUI's come from being drunk

Ok Randy...now I'm mad. I have one son who is a federal officer from Homeland Security...it IS coming in from Mexico..I have another son that is in Security Forces in the Air Force...you are sooo naive...why do you think we need ICE and Security Forces? You think it's our people causing these problems? I'll tell you where these problems are coming from...under vans..suv's and planes across our borders. Wake up. My sons put their lives on the line every day to protect idiots like you from these predators and personally I don't know why. You certainly don't give a rat's ass

dee..go ask any policeman where meth comes from. they will tell you its made in southern oklahoma, north texas. it does not come from mexico. DUIs is from being drunk, notfrom being mexican. and dee to get a roofing, construction, laborer, or lawn crews job they alls you have to do is show up at 7am. the brown skinned people usually will be ready for work. the white skinned toothless meth heads show up to work 2 or 3 hours so they can buy another rock. managers that have a job that needs to be done, need help from able bodied hard workers not crack head ambulance chasers. you go run a labor intensive business, you may find it enlightning. i have.

Yea Dee...Finally, someone who sees this for what it is. I am sooo sick of the pro-illegals...they have sold this country out!!! I was in San Antonio last week...oh my god...English was practically non-existent...in the US..that is sooo scary. They are taking over this country and it is soooo sad...no one cares. I hate to tell you this Gary, from OKC, but guess who gets the most DUI's with no licenses and insurance here? HMMM? I would say it is people who can't get licenses, hands down...it's amazing. Call any Oklahoma or Texas PD and ask them! It wasn't too long ago a child was playing in his driveway and an illegal woman backed over him and guess what she said? "Hurry up and bond me out so I can go back to Mexico!" Randy, guess who brings in the most meth for the meth heads you speak of...you might want to read about the drug wars in Brownsville that are making there way here. I don't work for Terrill and I don't cheat on taxes but I sure read the news. Most people have to get background checks to get a job nowdays already...the only businesses that are not checking backgrounds are probably the ones intentionally breaking the law.

Ok Gary, first, your logic is ludicrist..not to mention short-sided. That proposal by Congress was complete Shamnesty!! It promised them everything! They were going to have more rights than you or I as citizens. Second, yeah, drunk driving is illegal and anyone caught doing it should be punished severely whether they are legal citizens or not. You want to know what makes my blood boil Gary??? Having to see two families bury their daughters that were killed by a illegal alien drunk driver that had THREE not One but THREE drunk driving incidents and was set FREE! Not deported...set FREE to do it again and again. No drivers license, no insurance, not a legal citizen even. Now, you tell those parents that jerk had as much right to be here as we do and should be given every opportunity possible to become an American citizen!!

yeah well i live in oklahoma. been here my whole life. so were my parents, and their parents, and great grandparents. when they came over from ireland...on a boat. they never became citizens, but my grand parents did. ive paid more taxes over my 44 years in oklahoma than your entire family in oklahoma. so maybe it is you that should go. and my grandmother is cherokee so please. and jimmy???whats this quote?? is it from your toothless tabbacca chewing grandmother in shady shores"A legal citizen must read write and speak the english language." you racists are so ignorant. a legal citizen doesnt have to do anything. just like HB1804. toothless
Randy, Moore - Jun 9, 2008 at 8:34 pm
Steve, very well stated ! Go home and fix your own country is the best advice I can think of because the majority of the people in Oklahoma do not want you in this state and I for one will turn you in if I even think you might be illegal so you really better know the English language for anyone to buy into the fact that you are legal. A legal citizen must read write and speak the english language.
Jimmy, Sandy Shores - Jun 9, 2008 at 8:23 pm
It is interesting how people say either they 1) love legal immigrants or 2) just want the law properly enforced. This is such incredible lying hypocrisy. First, when Congress worked to pass a law that would have provided a way for many of them to become legal, registered and law abiding, wow many of the same people were enraged at such an idea. So, it is a completely falsehood to say I just want them to come legally - then oppose a legal means. Be honest, you don't want more brown skinned people around. Second, people say it is about the rule of law. Oh really! It is also the rule of law that people pay taxes and yet 23 million American CITIZENS cheat every single year. What? That doesn't make your blood boil and cause you to post rants on a blog? Shocking! How two-faced. Furthermore, the number one cause of death in the US is drunken driving. Hmmm, isn't that illegal. Yet, not a peep. We aren't talking about people that look different and talk a funny language here folks. Drunken driving kills. Get a real perspective about the rule of law!

Well, Richard here is what the pro-illegals will say to you. Low wages? They aren't paid low wages...if you think "$8.00 - $10.00 is low wages..ask a bank teller what they think about working for slave wages." Well, I couldn't live on $8.00 and hour and the reason the illegals can is because they have 10-15 family members living in each apartment or house sharing expenses after they send their families money in Mexico.

randy, you sound so convinced, go live there for all we care. but deportation is coming and soon! tell you what, why don't you get on your horse and help to put on ballet. winner takes all, no lawsuits no crying (while deportation occurs), and no liberal (demoliar) judges creating their own law. how about it? all those jobs you are spouting off about were all held by citizens at one time until fibber coates and his crew did everything to drive the citizens away by extra low pay, no benefits, and such and then got the criminals as their modern day slaves, of course they never drop there pricing to the governments and/or private sector (wonder were the money went coates). if the jobs were not here, the criminals would not be slithering in. so let's get it on the ballet. knowing full well the demoliars could not let it happen
richard, oklahoma city - Jun 9, 2008 at 7:10 pm
well said Robert. And to add to that...the illegal activists also spout ridiculous agendas about illegals being good for our economy. Hogwash! You people say they contribute to our society? Oh yeah, drugs, crime etc. The ones that do stay one step ahead of ICE and stay out of trouble send most of their money back to Mexico. How's that helping Us?Also, how to you think they pay into social security when they don't even have valid social security numbers?

I'm so tired of these latino activists protecting those who are here illegally. First of all, they cross the border without informing the government of their present. In this day of age when we are facing the daily threat of terrorists coming here and destroying this country, this is why we need to know who's here and if they are here illegally, they need to be ship back to their home countries and never allowed to come here. HB 1804 was designed to keep illegals out of this state so that it never become a haven for illegals. It doesn't bar legal citizens to come here. I know first hand how illegals have ruined the cities and states they migrate to. In Los Angeles and for that matter the whole state of krapyfornia, illegals have ruined the school system, the welfare system, etc. And crime is out of control in those areas because most of them who are committing these crimes are illegal gang members. And if you get in an accident involving an illegal alien who doesn't have insurance like the one happened in Virginia, guess what, you're out of luck; largely because they will be put back on the streets instead of being deported. And there should be provisions that says that if a baby born in the US whose mother is an illegal citizen, that child is not a US citizen unless that mother becomes a US citizen. There also should be penalties for cities that become a santiuary city by striping them of funds and state aid. And english should be the official language of the state and country. And steve, you're right about the learning of languages of other countries. A guy at work, who is from Italy and speak english well can go to his native country and speak their language, but if i go to Italy, i would have to learn italian because i can't speak english in that country. The latino groups need to understand that illegals are a threat to the quality of life of our communities as well as the safety of the public. Heaven forbid that if one or more of the illegals that are here in this country are al queda terrorists, then we are in trouble. Thats what these people don't understand. Its protecting the country from terrorists. And how come we don't here from Asian, European, or other groups protesting this bill. How odd is that.

richard, i did not even have to show i.d.. how were the hospital employees to know if i climbed a fence, swam from san diego, or popped out a drup smuggling plane? oh, and richard i dont speak spanish but they were able to treat me anyways. i dont see why you 1804 people dont stand behind something that matters. like medical treatment for all like in mexico, rather than the crap you have to go through here. or how about more police to find the "real criminals" like find whoever killed those two little girls out east. or how about more traffic barriers dividing all the states highways. or a better class of politicians that will work for all the people, not just the ones that pay them off. like ive said before all you 1804 fanatics are missing the forrest for the trees. a state that does not border a foreign country will never have the resources to combat this particular problem. the bill is nothing more than fluff to put into pompous terrills run for governor. if it costs so much to have a few translators, and print some bilingual pamplets we are in the wrong business or terrill taking money on the back side. and as i understand itat least businesses ive run payroll for in the past, those folks were all paying taxes. federal and state. as well as contributing for medicaid and social security. they take the jobs that our own meth head citizens wont work. if you need proof go ask most lawn services, construction crews, roofing crews, hell they even work for the state, and city. not hard to produce an i.d., and a fake social card. then renew it every time ice comes a knocking. i really dont even think you have a dog in this fight, and if gay marrige was legal, you would be asking terrill out on dates.

richard, oklahoma city - Jun 9, 2008 at 6:08 pm
Fernando, Enid You are full of crap illigals do nothing to help our economy. What they do is cost true legal Americans money in the form of welfare, medical, wear and tear on roads etc etc. English only is not being racist. You should learn the language of the country you want to be a citizen of. I have travevled the world and had to learn enough of the host countries language to get by, because they did not speak english!!!! These countries did not offer english as a second language for me or anyone else. Also if I got hurt I paid my own bill for care and prescriptions. If the United States takes away welfare, medical, and the other free perks the illegals get then they will not have a reason to come to our country. They say they want to work, then they neeed to work on the problems in their country, instead of adding to ours.
Steve, moore - Jun 9, 2008 at 5:52 pm
Your article said this law sends a negative message that immigrants aren't welcome in Oklahoma. By quoting this line, you are promoting opposition. This law is toward ILLEGAL immigrants! According to an INS bulletin last month they are currently processing applications that were dated OCT '92, for adults and Nov '2004 for children. During that time you cannot have left the United States or your application will be voided and you would be kicked to the back of the line. I'm not claiming to know everything, but I know that it's not as easy as filling out the paper work and paying the money. I am of Mexican heritage, but I too believe in people learning English while in the United States; but to use the excuse that you've been to other countries is lame. I would wager that the people in those countries knew at least some of the different languages of the countries that surrounded them, to think that they would cater to the English language would be unreasonable and arrogant unless they bordered a country or had a large enough population to necessitate it.
Fabio, SW Oklahoma - Jun 9, 2008 at 4:59 pm
I have been to several other countries. Not only is the access to the countries monitored, but I had to learn their language if I wanted to eat, sleep, or purchase anything. Nothing was in dual languages, it was in their language. I didn't ask or request that they change everything in their country because I am American. I did what was asked of me. I learned the language, customs, and laws and abided by them. I didn't go to their country illegally. I did all the necessary paperwork and made sure it was in order before going. So yes, learn English and take the proper steps to start off in this country the right way. If people did it that way, we wouldn't be having this issue.

Have any of you people bothered to read the article or try to understand the judges ruling? Anyone with half a brain knew that parts of 1804 would be thrown out by judges that base their rulings on law, common sense, and the Constitution. All they did was strike some of the penalties that were too harsh to begin with on employers that unknowingly employ illegals. This is exactly why Terril's son of 1804 didn't get passed this year because it goes too far.
Chris, Oklahoma City - Jun 9, 2008 at 3:47 pm
Why should it shock me to know that there are people with this kind of mentality. instead of all talk why not do something about it why not be an illegal immigrant for a month live in their shoes, go to their countries and have nothing to eat on come to the US illegal and be treated like dirt from people like you and then maybe just maybe you will have a little respect for what these people do for you as an economy as a whole. Obviously you do not sound like people who will like to get down on the ground and pick strawberries your big mouth won't allow you to earn anything. Don't say anything about their groups being racist whatever comes out of your mouth is racist no matter what the situation you look at people different just because they look different, what does that make you. Have you ever stopped to think maybe not can't do that either, huh, just exactly what this world would be without the real people behind the hard work?
