Lawmaker wants prescription deaths reporting
LOS ANGELES (AP) — State Sen. Curren D. Price Jr. is calling for the California Medical Board to receive coroners' reports for all deaths that are related to prescription drug use in an attempt to identify doctors with harmful prescribing practices.
The Los Angeles Times reports (http://lat.ms/Shd7GB ) the Democrat from Los Angeles said Monday that authorities have failed to recognize how often people overdose on medications prescribed by doctors.
The move comes in response to a Times investigation published Sunday that found that in nearly half of the 3,733 accidental deaths from prescription drugs the newspaper reviewed, a doctor had prescribed at least one drug that caused or contributed to the death.
Price says he will introduce a bill requiring the new reporting to improve accountability.
