Lawmakers call for interim study on illegal immigration

OKLAHOMA CITY - A couple of state lawmakers are calling for an interim study on the need for new guidelines to fight illegal immigration.

Representatives Randy Terrill and Kevin Calvey say records indicate illegal aliens have become a net drain on state government. The Oklahoma Tax Commission says the amount of tax revenue paid by illegal aliens is far less than the cost of educating the children of illegal aliens in public schools.

Terrill and Calvey, both Republicans, have introduced measures to require proof of citizenship before a person could vote or receive state assistance. The bills died in the Legislature.

The lawmakers say they want to explore ending taxpayer subsidies of illegal aliens and penalizing employers who knowingly hire illegal immigrants.
