A Midwest City man, accused of stealing a riding lawn mower, cut his wrists and throat when Norman police tried to take him into custody.

Joe Wayne Dean Leary, 25, was treated at Norman Regional Hospital before being booked into the Cleveland County jail Monday afternoon, Capt. Tom Easley said. Leary remained in jail Wednesday in lieu of $11,000 bail.

Leary was arrested after a woman spotted a man loading a riding lawn mower onto a trailer and driving away in a pickup from her residence in the 8200 block of Cedar Lane. The woman pursued the pickup in her vehicle while calling police on a cellphone and providing updates, Easley said.

The man stopped and disconnected the trailer at 60th Avenue NE and Day Street, then continued driving across open fields until officers spotted him near Tecumseh Road. Police followed him for two more miles before forcing him to pull over, Easley said.

The man used a knife to cut himself before surrendering to police about 4:25 p.m., Easley said.

Charges of grand larceny, driving under the influence of drugs, eluding a police officer and no driver's license have been filed against Leary in Cleveland County District Court.
