Lawton airport may join lawsuit over closure

LAWTON -- The Lawton-Fort Sill Regional Airport governing board is considering joining a lawsuit aimed to overturning the decision to close the control towers of 149 airports throughout the nation.



Among the towers scheduled to close in April or May is that at the Lawton airport.

The Lawton Constitution reports that air traffic controllers at the Lawton site are employees of a private firm rather than workers with the Federal Aviation Administration, which made the decision to close 149 towers.

Concerns including the responsibility of who will turn on the instrument landing system after hours have the Lawton officials studying what move comes next.
