An inmate in the Lawton City jail died Thursday morning, police said.

A correctional officer who was checking cells overnight found William Harris, 48, slumped over in his cell and suffering from some type of medical condition, Lawton police said.

The inmate was unresponsive, police said. Officers attempted lifesaving procedures until emergency personnel arrived to take over. Harris was taken to Comanche County Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead about 12:40 a.m.

Harris had been in jail since being arrested Sunday on a domestic abuse complaint, police said.

The jail inspection division of the state Health Department is investigating the death.
