The Rev. Shane Hall woke up Jan. 4 to find that he had made the news.

Hall, senior pastor of First Baptist Church of Lawton, was named to the Baptist Messenger’s list of "10 SBC Pastors to Watch in 2010.” He was the only Oklahoman on the list compiled by editors of the Messenger, the official newspaper of the Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma.

Douglas Baker, the Messenger’s executive editor and the convention’s communications director, said the editors looked for Southern Baptist leaders across the country with widespread influence. He said they also wanted to highlight leaders who were not as vocal as others but were helping shape the Southern Baptist Convention.

"One of the good things about the denomination is men of God are used by God to impact local churches, and those churches impact other churches to a point that they rise to influence the SBC,” Baker said. "They deserve to be heard and studied.”

Hall was praised for serving as a model for younger pastors who take pastorates of more established congregations.

"He is a noted leader among older congregations” and "capable of leading diverse generations toward renewal and growth,” the editors wrote.
