— The man who was shot and killed after opening his door to two police officers Sunday was holding a firearm, authorities said Monday.

Two Lawton police officers, Anthony Edwards and Eli Garcia, responded to a call of vandalism that resulted in Daniel Martin, 47, being fatally shot, according to police.

About 1:15 a.m., officers were dispatched to the 4100 block of SW Park Ridge Boulevard after a caller said three people were outside vandalizing vehicles. Police swept the area and did not find the three men or the vandalized vehicles, but heard yelling coming from inside a home.

Edwards and Garcia went to the front door and announced their presence, police said. Martin opened the door while holding a firearm, prompting Edwards and Garcia to respond with lethal force, police said. A third officer said he heard one of the officers at the door yell, “gun,” and shots were fired.

The police report did not indicate whether Martin pointed the weapon at police.

Martin died at the scene.

The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation is investigating.
