Lawyer: Tunisian court convicts 8 men of terrorism
Published: November 8, 2009
TUNIS, Tunisia (AP) — A defense lawyer says a Tunisian court has convicted eight men on charges of membership in a terrorist organization and given them prison sentences ranging from three to 12 years each.
Defense attorney Anouar Kousri says the men, aged 20 to 30, were accused of providing an unnamed terrorist group with weapons.
Kousri called Sunday's verdict "very severe" and cited a lack of sufficient evidence against his clients. He said the defendants had sought to retract confessions that they alleged were made under torture.
Kousri said he would appeal the verdict.
