EMSA contractor Paramedics Plus has issued layoff notices to all of its 717 employees in Oklahoma City and Tulsa — but the workers won’t lose their jobs.
At midnight on Nov. 1, Paramedics Plus workers will become employees of Greenwood Village, Colo.-based American Medical Response, the new contractor for EMSA ambulance service.
Paramedics Plus had to issue the layoff notice to comply with a federal law that requires employers to give workers 60 days notice when a company shuts down, said Lara O’Leary, a spokeswoman for EMSA and Paramedics Plus.
“Ninety-nine point nine percent of the people here will keep their jobs,” O’Leary said.
Paramedics Plus employs about more than 350 people in Oklahoma City and a similar number in Tulsa.
There will be no interruption in service during the transition to the new contractor, said Joanne McNeil, director of administration for Paramedics Plus.
The new contractor will use the same ambulance fleet and the same paramedics, McNeil said. The switch mostly involves Paramedics Plus employees filling out new tax forms over the next month to become AMR employees.
“The process is going to be totally seamless, not just for the employees, but the citizens and the EMSA community as well,” she said.
Tyler, Texas-based Paramedics Plus lost its contract for ambulance services in Tulsa and Oklahoma City in January When the EMSA Board of Trustees approved a new $247 million, five-year contract with rival bidder AMR. Paramedics Plus had held the EMSA contract since 1998.
EMSA is the government agency that oversees contract ambulance service to more than 1.1 million people in Oklahoma City and Tulsa.
