In response to Valentine’s Day where couples exchange candy, flowers and greeting cards, Sunday has been declared Singles Awareness Day. This is the day for all single people to stand up and take pride in being single.

Feb 13A couple from Edmond with many years of love experience...

I don’t think you’ll find any Happy Singles Awareness Day cards in the stores, but many single people across the nation will get together to exchange gifts with their single friends. Dustin Barnes from Mississippi State University is the creator of this day. Yes, Barnes was single at the time. He said he established the day for single people who were sick of feeling left out on Valentine’s Day.

I remember being single. I didn’t care for it much. I wasn’t a bar-type guy, so I was limited on meeting potential mates to co-workers and the cashier at the grocery store. Finally, I discovered a church singles group. These people are still friends of mine years later and, yes, I married a woman from the group.

Being single can be tough and lonely at times, but it has advantages such as spending money foolishly.

Do you want that 90-inch HDTV with stereo sound system? Who’s going to say no?

Want to wear the same shirt for days and eat cookies for breakfast? Go ahead. Who’s going to stop you?

Other advantages: snoring till you rattle the windows; controlling the TV remote; watching six football games on a Sunday and wearing Batman pajamas even if you are 25 years old.

The downside is research shows married men outlive single men.

So single men, live it up while you can and don’t waste life bemoaning the fact you’re still not married.
