Legacy Park construction to begin in northwest Norman

— Construction of Legacy Park on the city's northwest side will begin in about a month, officials said.

City council members approved a construction contract Tuesday, eliminating some proposed decorative alternatives to reduce costs but keeping most of the proposed design features including a large, man-made pond with water fountains, a performance stage and two restaurant pads.

The eight-acre park in the University North Park Addition is expected to be the focal point of the retail portion of the tax increment financing district, which is east of Interstate 35 on 24th Avenue NW.

“We've gone a long way to make this the gem of the park system,” said Councilman Tom Kovach.

CGC of Edmond submitted the low bid for the project, with a base bid of $5.5 million. The council approved another $372,000 in expenditures for park enhancements, bringing the total contract amount to $5,897,600.
