MEXICO CITY (AP) — Reigning Mexico first division champion Leon kicked off the Clausura season with a 1-1 draw against Atlante on Sunday.
Runner-up America defeated Tigres 3-0 on Saturday, while Puebla scored twice in second-half injury time to salvage a 2-2 draw against Pumas on Sunday, in the first round of matches in the second half of Mexico's two split seasons.
In other weekend results: Toluca defeated Pachuca 1-0, Santos Laguna vs. Chivas and Chiapas vs. Vercruz finished in 1-1 draws, Queretaro overcame Morelia 1-0, and Monterrey vs. Cruz Azul and Atlas vs. Tijuana were 0-0 draws.
Atlante failed to convert two-first half penalties, with Narciso Mina striking the post in the 28th minute and fellow Ecuadorian Michael Arroyo having his attempt saved by goalkeeper William Yarbrough in the 41st.
Carlos Pena netted for Leon with a sweeping left foot effort in the 35th and relegation-threatened Atlante's equalizer came one minute after halftime through a driven shot from the edge of the box by Manuel Viniegra.
America opened the scoring in the 10th minute against Tigres when Luis Gabriel Rey's shot from outside the penalty area deflected past goalkeeper Enrique Palos.
Paul Aguilar slotted in the second in the 30th, before Raul Jimenez completed the scoring four minutes after halftime.
Puebla's Carlos Sanchez converted a penalty in the fifth minute of second-half injury time to equalize against Pumas, after Matias Alustiza had chipped the goalkeeper in the 91st to get a goal back.
Martin Bravo had scored twice in the first half for Pumas.
Toluca took the points against Pachuca when Paraguayan Pablo Velazquez turned sharply and fired a shot into the corner of the goal in the 75th.
