Leon loses to relegation-threatened Leones Negros

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Defending champion Leon lost 1-0 to relegation-threatened Leones Negros on Sunday, while America remains top of Mexico's first division after maintaining their unbeaten record with a goal-less draw against Chiapas on Saturday.

Monterrey defeated Puebla 1-0 to take second place in the standings with 13 points after the sixth round, along with Atlas that trails on goal difference after losing 3-1 to Pachuca. Both played Saturday and are three points behind America.

In other weekend matches, Tigres thrashed Morelia 5-1, Santos Laguna beat Toluca 3-0, Veracruz drew 0-0 with Chivas, Cruz Azul overcame Queretaro 2-1 and Pumas drew 1-1 with Tijuana.

Fidel Martinez struck from close range for Leones Negros in the 69th minute after Leon had gone down to 10 players when Edwin Hernandez's was sent off in the 21st. Leones Negros captain Leonardo Cufre was later shown a red card in the 82nd.

America was unable to score against Chiapas and dropped its first points of the 2014 Apertura season.

The league's current top-scorer Dorlan Pabon, netted a tap-in for Monterrey in the 67th to secure the win, while Argentina's Matias Alustiza scored all three for Pachuca before Arturo Gonzalez pulled one back for Atlas in the 78th.
