Who will pay?

Regarding "Why do we have a Federal Reserve?” (Associated Press news feature, Oct. 30): Why are unelected officials setting monetary policy for our country? Isn’t this a free-market society where supply and demand and "the invisible hand” should determine the economy’s temperature”? Our national debt is over $10.5 trillion and growing daily. How will we pay for these bailouts, stimulus packages, invasions and foreign aid programs the Federal Reserve is continuously funding, even when a majority of Americans are against them?

The Fed is borrowing trillions of dollars from China and flooding the global market with this paper that isn’t going to be worth a dime! Do our elected officials not understand the concept of inflation? Or do they not care? This article is exactly the type of rhetoric that distracts Americans from what our elected officials are doing to this country. I oppose the mentality that government knows best and urge readers to investigate why the Fed has more power over the economy than any other institution. Shouldn’t the people hold the most power?

Where the blame lies

Of all the problems facing us at this critical time in our history, one of the worst and most embarrassing is fraud in our presidential election system. This problem has been getting worse every year and nothing’s being done to correct it. There’s no telling how many different systems we have from state to state for people to cast their votes and just as many ways to count the vote. We’ve been hearing the stories of people registering as many as a hundred or more times to vote. I’m afraid we’ll be looking back to 2008 as the darkest year in our voting history. Congress is where the blame lies, especially when it comes to presidential elections.

Don Spence, Oklahoma City

A sad day

Recently while I was eating at a restaurant on May Avenue, an Oklahoma City bus passed by. On it was an ad completely in Spanish. While visiting Spain last year (and Mexico, extensively over many years), I didn’t see one public transport with an ad in English. It’s a sad day when I can’t understand an ad in my own country.

Mary Rose, Oklahoma City

Skewed priorities

Every day in this country, 4,000 babies are killed through abortion. Since the Roe v. Wade decision, 50 million have been killed. That’s more people than have been killed in all wars combined! Yet a majority of voters are more concerned about the economy than protecting innocent babies. Although the economy is in turmoil, government continues to funnel taxpayer dollars to Planned Parenthood, the largest abortion provider in the U.S. No doubt the abortion doctors are worried about the troubled economy, as a failing economy would harm their lavish lifestyles.

Sue Carel, Tuttle

Miles behind

Regarding "Plain and simple: More college grads a must for state” (Our Views, Oct. 28): Not only do we need more college graduates, we need communities these graduates want to live in. Our leaders must focus on attracting the young creative working class that fuels culture and a greater sense of what’s local, authentic and community. Unfortunately, there are many impediments. Oklahoma City has finished last in a number of reports on public transportation and walkable, bike-friendly communities. We’re years away from a viable rail transit system; meanwhile, other cities are miles ahead.

But we do have an opportunity. Oklahoma is poised to be a leader in a clean-energy economy by continuing our production of clean-burning natural gas and propelling a booming renewable energy industry that creates thousands of quality green jobs. We’re already one of the most recession-proof communities with the some of the lowest housing costs in the country and, of course, we have an NBA team. So let’s move toward building more sustainable communities, supporting arts, culture, a diverse set of faith communities and public transportation.

Eric Pollard, Norman

Isn’t it funny?

With the price of gasoline breaking below $2 a gallon, where are all the politicians bellowing at the oil companies about lower prices? U.S. Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif., actually told an oil company representative in a committee hearing that Congress would "nationalize” the oil companies if prices keep going up.

With the price of oil dropping like a rock, how long will it be before her committee starts complaining the oil companies aren’t making enough money to pay the taxes the government needs to survive? Isn’t it funny how the free market and the law of supply and demand work?

Jim Lawson, Oklahoma City

Unimaginable

In response to Bill Rupert (Your Views, Oct. 27): I can’t imagine our government allowing the Iraqi government to arrest, try and imprison our troops. I feel for our women over there. Arabs don’t have much pity for their own women, let alone for American women. They would find the slightest infraction to imprison an American woman.

How can our troops know all of the laws of that country? How can we stop this? I was in the Women’s Army Corps over 55 years ago. We had guards on our barracks. Now the women are thrown into situations where they’re totally unprotected.

One other point....there is a whole new, younger generation involved here. Their expectations are not the same as those of us over the 40 mark. When I was a young 20 year old, I most certainly did not share the same ideals and goals of my parents and wanted something different. Now past 40, what they wanted does not seem so bad.
Sallie, Del City - Nov 13, 2008 at 9:15 am
I found this interesting. Reasons for this surge can be and will be argued/explained many times in our future as a nation. I personally find Democrats and Obama as a whole repugnant, but I am a die hard Republican and have been for many years. This nation demanded and got the "change" it wants. In our current times and conditions, I sincerely hope that any and all changes benefit the country, not just a particular segement of the populace. We shall see won't we? Voter excitement, always up before a presidential election, is pushing registration through the roof so far this year - with more than 3.5 million people rushing to join in the historic balloting, according to an Associated Press survey that offers the first national snapshot.Figures are up for blacks, women and young people. Rural and city. South and North. Overall, the AP found that nearly one in 65 adult Americans signed up to vote in just the first three months of the year. And in the 21 states that were able to provide comparable data, new registrations have soared about 64 percent from the same three months in the 2004 campaign.

Reginald you have your opinion and I have mine. I would be willing to bet my soul on my opinion how about you ?? If you knew me then you would know that I was being very civil. I didn't ask anyone to agree with my opinion I simply made a very true statement.
Jimmy, Sandy Shores - Nov 7, 2008 at 7:15 am
Jack, I have to say, you are throwing some particularly vile misinformation out there tonight. What "black columnists" called "for all black[s] to riot"? That was blatant race baiting spewed by right wingers like Michelle Malkin, Tom Sullivan, and Jonah Goldberg. Let's be clear: It was RIGHT wing bigots who tried to spread the specter of rioting blacks. That was a baseless and despicable slur, which you are now repeating AND adding that, somehow, it was actually unnamed "black columnists" issuing a call for rioting. I challenge you to provide one verifiable and legitimate source to support your claims, here. But that's pretty much a moot point, since there are no such sources. It's misinformation like this that feeds a dangerous and divisive ignorance that keeps us down, brother, and you know (or at least should) know better.
Stephen, Ada - Nov 6, 2008 at 9:59 pm
Jack, You are incorrect. There would not have been any riots. Also, if you could get me the names of the columnists, I would greatly appreciate it.

Jimmy, Why do you consider people who disagree with your position idiots? You have a right to your opinion. However, be civil. One of the reasons that McCain lost, besides not vetting Sarah Palin, is that he moved more to the Conservative base versus appealing to the moderate center. Obama was able to reach out to that moderate base. Combine that with the low approval of the Bush administration and you get an Obama win. It is as simple as that.
Reginald, Overland Park - Nov 6, 2008 at 8:22 pm
Reginald you are delirious if you think for one minute there wouldn't have been chaos throughout the land if Obama had lost. Say what you will but he was voted in by a bunch of east coast yankees and west coast freaks and colorado belongs on the west coast, as far as New mexico is concerned we can all see why that happened. The people of Iowa are just idiots that think they may sell some corn for the ethanol under Obama. Florida is full of yankees and cubans go figure, not a racist bone in my body I just say what most wont. Obama is moving on up to the east side.
Jimmy, Sandy Shores - Nov 6, 2008 at 7:09 pm
Jack, it might interest you to know that even though my daughter does not believe in God, she does believe in Jesus, not his divinity, but his teachings. She thinks he is the greatest teacher ever born. That is why she lets me take my granddaughter to church and she never voices her opinion around the children. She thinks Christian values are the best for everyone to live by. She was raised in the church but somewhere along the line she formed a belief different than mine. She adored her father and he didn't believe either, so that's probably what happened. I pray that God will someday speak to her as He did to me.
judie, Oklahoma City - Nov 6, 2008 at 6:18 pm
What commentators? I would like to know. I read quite extensively and I did not see any of that. By the way, Glenn Beck did bring it up. The day before the election, I had KTOK on the radio. He was talking with someone on the radio and they were talking about the odds that Detroit would riot if Obama won. He said that it would be 100% if he lost and 35% if Obama won. Quie frankly, it ticked me off. We are all Americans. We win some and we lose some. No one would have rioted if Obama would have lost.

T, many people think that one of the Jesus was to bring peace, however, even when he was born, the angels that announced his birth said differently, Luke 2:14 "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests." You must seek God in order to find peace. People that look for peace in the things here on earth will be sorely disappointed.

Jack... One, I never said that anyone should worship Obama. I said that we would need to get behind the new president. That wouldn't have mattered if McCain would have won or not. Secondly, black people would not have rioted if Obama would have lost. I heard that bull on Glenn Beck and it made me sick. We are Americans first. We understand the political game. However, if you look at fringe elements on the right that wanted to kill Obama...now that is Un-American. The people that voted for Obama are not racists. They are people who believe in his message. I would not categorize people who voted for McCain as racists. My best friend voted for McCain and I have no hard feelings. It is a difference in opinion. It is all about the message and what people stand for. Do you think that if it would have been Alan Keyes who ran for the Republican Party against Hillary Clinton that we would have voted for Keyes because he is black? No, most of us would have voted for Hillary because of what she stands for.
Reginald, Overland Park - Nov 6, 2008 at 2:18 pm
A few years ago a fellow from Yukon was having a letter to the Editor published almost every month. Then he ran for the U.S. house and won. He did little of importance during his term. When he got out he went back to writing letters to the Editor. Sorry I can't recall his name. About the only thing opponents could bring up is he is a Mormon. BIG DEAL!

Jack, I am not trying to paint you as the bad guy. I am simply trying to point out that we are all affected by our life experiences. I have had more of them than you. I have known of girls who died from abortions, and I have seen the devestation it left for the families and I have seen those same families fight to end illegal abortions. These were wonderful God-fearing, patriotic Americans who did not want anyone else to suffer as they had suffered. Just as I was able to begin to see the other side of capitol punishment, I would hope that you could envision a little of the other side of illegal abortions. You don't have to change your stance in order to say, yes I understand why you may feel the way you do. I certainly understand why you feel the way you do, because you love that child of yours so much, you cannot understand how anyone could not feel the same. Kudos to you. And let's hope that in the near future there will be an amendment and that this difference of ours will be resolved.

T, I think you missed Matthew 23 with Jesus Himself tearing into sinners. It doesn't sound very loving to me. There are quite a few other scriptures where it clearly shows many people will burn as their final reward. You must love the Father and the Son and obey to the best of your ability. Then when you realize your best doesn't even come close to being perfect, you ask the Messiah to intercede for you. By the way, I kill everyone I hate. So far the number is zero. Will Rogers said he never met a man he didn't like. It was only after he met them he realized he didn't like them. With communication what it is now, few people could make that claim truthfully. Most of us have opinions made of high profile people through the media.
