Share “Life after Tech for Pokes”

STILLWATER — It’s time to refocus.

Goals, hopes and perspectives have to change now.

Oklahoma State’s hopes of a championship are gone, and as disappointing as that is for coaches, players and fans, this might be a good time to step back and look to where this program has climbed.

Even with one more loss in the remaining three games, OSU would finish with 10 wins — something that has occurred just three times in school history. And the Pokes have never won 11 games, which could happen if things go right.

Expectations escalated quickly with that huge victory at Missouri a month ago. So it’s hard to remember how satisfying a nine-win season would have been before that. After all, they’ve had just one of those in 20 years.

OSU is approaching one of the five or six best seasons in school history. It doesn’t feel that way after Saturday’s loss, but it’s the truth.

For some fans, refocusing will be easy — others, not so much.

For coaches, it’s not an option. OSU coach Mike Gundy has the job of making sure the players are able to turn attention to the task ahead rather than opportunities missed.

And he had already begun Saturday night after the Tech loss. Though the team hasn’t been shy about admitting that its overarching goal for the season was to earn a spot in the Big 12 title game, Gundy pointed to refocused goals in his postgame news conference.

"Our goal every year before the season starts is to put ourselves in position to win every game we play,” he said.
