Glamour eyes: Sunglasses are sultry and sporty this season

Sunglasses are more glamorous than ever — yet many manufacturers are adding a sporty quality that can seamlessly take sunglasses from the office to the golf course.

Sunglasses are big this season. Literally. Oversized statements of glamour are what Oklahoma City women are shopping for in shades, said Ryan Bowling, part owner of Black Optical in Classen Curve.

It’s all about hybrid shapes, he said, such as roundish lenses that point upward in the corner, similar to, but more subtle than, a cat-eye style.Lens designers are using beautiful layered acetates to create interesting color and design effects on frames.

Retro browline frame styles, similar to the Malcolm X spectacle, with heavy black or colored plastic on the top rims and metal on the bottom, are popular for men and women, Bowling said.

Gayle Gordon, owner of Gordon Stewart in Nichols Hills, carries strictly Chanel sunglasses. Her clients, who typically are a bit more traditional, stray from trends and prefer the moderate-size Chanel styles, with round colorful frames and insignias, including the traditional interlocked “C” logo, crystal flowers and the newest bow insignia.

She and Bowling agree that sport shades are popular among men and women this season. She’ll carry Chanel’s new sport frame fashioned in soft, matte rubber, black on the outside with a white Chanel insignia on the temples. Inside the temples is a quilted white rubber that’s easily cleaned.

The Chanel sport glasses are polarized, so they’re great for outdoor wear and help eliminate glare from the sun off water and other surfaces.
