Too few people know how to properly use and care for their kitchen knives. Chad Ward aims to fix that with his exacting and exhaustive "An Edge in the Kitchen.” Ward covers topics such as buying and using knives and maintaining their edges. Casual cooks might find a 230-page book on knife use a bit dense, but those who appreciate the pleasure of a well-cared-for knife will enjoy the depth.

SMOKING
Don't start
Hollywood to youths: Our movies glamorize smoking, but don't start yourself.
Six major studios will include anti-smoking announcements on millions of DVDs of motion pictures that include scenes with tobacco use.
The public-service announcements will appear on films rated G, PG and PG-13. Participating studios are Paramount Pictures, Sony Pictures Entertainment, 20th Century Fox, Universal Pictures, Walt Disney Co. and Warner Bros.
The deal involving the studios and California was brokered by the Entertainment Industry Foundation, a philanthropic organization.
WEB SITE
For tourists and foodies
A look at the Golden Gate Bridge and a visit to the sea lions living at the pier are tops on the list for most San Francisco visitors. But the local culinary scene is also a big draw, and the San Francisco Convention and Visitors Bureau has launched a micro-Web site for foodies: www.onlyinsanfrancisco.com/taste.
Visitors can search for restaurants by price, type of cuisine and neighborhood. But there also are more unusual listings such as restaurants that offer al fresco dining, inspiring views and dining adventures.
Fit for a king
Maybe you can't live like a king, but you can vacation in a castle.
The TripAdvisor Web site is offering a top 10 list of castle hotels in Europe, based on rankings by travelers and TripAdvisor editors.
The list is topped by the Glin Castle in Glin, Ireland, with a $491 average nightly rate, followed by Castle Stuart, Inverness, Scotland, $614; Thornbury Castle, Thornbury, England, $394; Domaine de la Tortiniere, Tours, France, $310; and Borthwick Castle, Edinburgh, Scotland, $273.
