Living Green: Four Oklahomans share their tips
Living Green: Four Oklahomans share their tips

Dann May, university professor
Fed up with Edmond neighborhood rules that kept him from installing solar panels and hanging his clothes out to dry on a backyard clothesline, May moved out to a large plot of land east of Norman. That may cause more pollution, he said, because his commute to Oklahoma City is longer now — but he's made up for it with a number of environmentally friendly add-ons. Some changes are free or cheap, he says, like energy-saving light bulbs and a bucket that catches rainwater from his drains. Others, like solar heat, are a bigger investment, he says, but pay off economically and environmentally in the long term.

Some of May's energy-saving tips:
Lighting:
Buying compact-fluorescent light bulbs is one of the easiest ways to save money and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, May says. "They're not sexy. You can't see them. But they'll save you lots of money,” he says.
Trade-ins: Trading in or giving away your old appliances for new ones can save energy — and that especially includes getting a programmable thermostat, May says.
Know sun:
May uses solar electricity, a solar water heater and solar-tube lights. But you can reap benefits without all that, he says, simply by planting trees in front of windows that get too hot from direct sunlight.
Insulate:
Caulking your windows can save on heating and air-conditioning in your house. Extra insulation in the attic can also help, May says. You may want to consider getting a home energy audit to determine where your home's leaks are.

I know I will probably get flamed for this, but who cares? As long as he is saving net money, then who cares about the environment? It's going to be there after we die, our kids die, ect. American’s are killing themselves anyway by smoking and beating each other, murder, suicide, debt.... Why don't we concentrate on ourselves, the environment will be fine :)

Wow, All that saved energy by moving to Norman. Isn't I-35 already clogged up enough! I'm so sorry, but a clothes dryer uses less energy. Not to mention I'm sure that if enough folks got together, that the City of Edmond would have to change their housing rules to add rules for homeowners to have solar panels. Sound like to me Mr. May, is a BIG CHICKEN for running away and not trying to change things for the better. Because he is not helping the environment, he is only satisfying his own mind. Nothing more nothing less.

You guys better not make nathan mad or he will hope you have a "we are marshall" moment. Worthless loser.
OK, Lahoma - Apr 22, 2008 at 2:19 pm
im gonna get in my hummer and drive 200miles one way to go buy the worst light bulbs, drive home, and run all of my old non-energy efficient appliances at one time! (which I can't afford to upgrade because of all the money i spend on gas)
Jennifer, Tulsa - Apr 22, 2008 at 1:42 pm
To be honest, I don't do anything for the environment for environment's sake; I do it because it saves me money. I drive an SUV, I commute over 30 miles a day, I pollute, and I really don't mind. If you should do it, do it because of the money you can save :-). I have.

First off let me say I am not a "tree-hugging hippie" I however do think that it is our responsibility to leave this earth with as little impact as possible. I think everyone is responsible even the "anti-green" Hummer driving egotistical freaks that live in Edmond and the like. I carry the canvas bags to the grocery store and I buy the CFL's but I get the paper and drink cans of pop etc so I am not perfect but I do try to help and so should everyone else. I however will not hang out my laundry on a line...I have standards :) lol
WildcatMom, Piedmont - Apr 22, 2008 at 11:30 am
I have a CFL that burned out recently. I purchased it over 6 years ago for an automatic yard light. 6 years...I think I purchased the bulb around $14.00, not to mention the energy savings. BTW-they have much less mercury in them that the standard mercury thermometer we had eons ago. I keep hearing people complain about the CFLs, and not being able to put them in regular trash (they should be haz wasted), HOWEVER, this is true for your standard AA, AAA, C and D batteries and I don't hear any complaining about that.
April, Oklahoma City - Apr 22, 2008 at 11:18 am
Good tips, I use all CFL in my home, and they have already paid for themselves and saved me on my electric bill. Am I concerned about the mercury gas? No, I open a window :-) And do make CFL's that are compatible with dimmer switches.
Russell, oklahoma city - Apr 22, 2008 at 10:31 am
That is so ignorant and stupid for a town to say you cannot hang your clothes out to dry, Now what the hell would that hurt.
glenda, oklahoma city - Apr 22, 2008 at 10:21 am
Edmond can't even get people to sign up for wind energy because residents have the idea that when the wind is not blowing, they will have blackouts. The city agreed to buy energy from a Northern Oklahoma wind energy cooperative. They may have to let the contract go back because

for those of you who took my littering comment seriously... c'mon, really? i do feel that Gore is a shmuck who should find a hole to live in and stay there. for the record, the world would be a better place if all the Kennedy's, Clintons, and Obama would join him. what a bunch of hypocrites. how many of you know that one of the top "green houses" in this country is W's ranch down in texas? he did it the right way... and he didn't buy "carbon offsets". why are there tornados? maybe we should all turn off our fans? maybe we shouldn't cook with fire anymore in case someone starts a fire... heck, maybe do away pregnancy all together so that stupid liberals quit producing a new generation of brainless morons. there have been just as many studies by scientists who say that this warming is just a natural cycle. for thousands of years the world has been heating and cooling and things have gone just fine. i am a christian, and i believe in God. i believe that he can pretty much to as he pleases with the weather. he's provided for us and he looks out for us. if he wants the weather to get 2 degrees warmer, then so be it. maybe he's trying to knock out the immoral people that flock to the liberal coasts? who knows. i just know that "earth day" isn't going to change anyone?

TYPICAL EDMOND BULL CRAP....LETS SAVE MONEY AND MOVE TO NORMAN BUT AND SPEND OUR LIFE SAVINGS DRIVING TO EDMOND EVERYDAY
dwayne, blair - Apr 22, 2008 at 9:47 am
Nathan dont let these kool aid drinkers push us around, look what caused the glaciers that were up to a mile thick to melt over europ and north america, scientists say it was a natural cycle, well why an we not be at the end of the cycle , if you have ever melted crisco in a pan it starts slow and speeds up towards the end, after all there were no power plants factories or suvs when the glaciers melted. Look at what the environmentalists all want, they want more regulation and they want to make(take) more of our choices for us, screws cfl's, you cannot use a dimmer switch on them, and dont break one in your house, it will release mercury.
robert, edmond - Apr 22, 2008 at 9:46 am
Good job Nathan. Your ignorance will only cause you to be ignored. I'm glad that your expertise in Environmental Science has shown you that it is OK to be totally apathetic in the way you treat your surroundings. Oh, and another thing, THIS DOESN'T HAVE TO BE A PARTISAN ISSUE. Do you hang out with Inhoffe every day?
Kurt, Midtown OKC - Apr 22, 2008 at 9:35 am
I think Nathan has a great idea. Let's push a couple more species to extinction and pour all our toxic chemicals down the drain just to SPITE one concerned individual. ;)
Scott, Norman - Apr 22, 2008 at 9:33 am
nathan, your comments here are as insightful as those about music in church. Shining example.
kma, gotebo - Apr 22, 2008 at 9:30 am
He acknowledges that he will be emitting more carbon by connuting from Norman to Edmond, which does not seem to bother him, nor does using those caustic mercury bulbs. //there ARE ways to minimize pollution, but this article is a poor example of a path toward that end. Like so many efforts, this is not even a "feel good" example.
Bud, Kansas City - Apr 22, 2008 at 9:09 am
stupid pot smoking Al Gore and his liberal friends have caused such an uproar. our earth is going through a cycle just like it has for millions of years. i can't stand tree hugging hippies. i don't condone littering, but when i read this stuff i want to litter in local parks and take extra trips just to even out their stupidity.
Nathan, Edmond - Apr 22, 2008 at 8:46 am
Brett, and I not surprised you don't know how to interpret what you've read. The story said "Edmond neighborhood rules", not City of Edmond. Many neighborhood associations have outdated rules or covenants, some of which have been thrown out by the courts. You should make sure of all of your facts before getting to critical.
Bobby, Edmond - Apr 22, 2008 at 8:21 am
I got a real kick out of the first line of the story. It's another reason not to like homeowners' associations: they're bad for the environment!
Joe, Yukon - Apr 22, 2008 at 7:55 am
I am sure the whole state of Oklahoma has secret plans in place to actively discourage any ecological initiative , given its kooky backwards mentality and politicians and its utter and total dependence on the oil and gas industry. But hey , we have a basketball team !
mister, bogata - Apr 22, 2008 at 7:24 am
I'm not surprised that the city of Edmond is anti Green.
