Spencer Mellow, local Oklahoma City artist, is taking his work to a new level this weekend, with a more world-wide approach. Spencer is the skinny jolly guy with the big beard, just in case you see him around town. However, his heart is much bigger than his beard.
Mellow’s main influence is Ralph Steadman and his work with Hunter S. Thompson,” I get a lot of inspiration through literature”, Mellow states. “I paint the images that my mind populates from the writing, and it gives me a chance to imagine.”
“Television makes me not want to paint. It brings no inspiration to the creative mind”
Mediums for Mellow’s artwork are watercolor on cold pressed paper; bright colors booming behind the black calligraphy ink. Mellow has also been known to use tattoo pigment in some of his pieces to create rich, bright colors. He makes his own “floating” frames that add a special effect to the artwork.
Spencer Mellow will have a live exhibit May 25, 26, and 27 at Twisted Root Gallery, 3012 N Walker, at The Paseo Arts Festival.
“I have learned everything I know by doing it ALL wrong the first chance I got. I paint, take pictures, write, make lots of noise without saying anything, I build things, I curse too much, I am allergic to hypocrisy, & I was put here to shake things up…” Mellow says.
