Michael Baron, artistic director at Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma, was recently honored with a Helen Hayes Award for his work on the Adventure Theatre production of “A Year With Frog and Toad.” Baron directed the popular children's musical at the Maryland theater in May 2011.

One of the country's most prestigious cultural honors, the Helen Hayes Award recognizes artistic achievement in plays and musicals produced in the greater Washington, D.C., area. Baron was one of 31 recipients honored at a ceremony held at the Warner Theatre in the nation's capital.

“What a special night! Winning the award was truly an honor and then to see all of my friends and theatre colleagues at the party afterward was a real treat,” Baron said.

“I am so proud of the entire staff and company at Adventure Theatre for dedicating themselves to creating the best in theatre for young audiences and I'm just thankful I could be a part of such a wonderful production.”

“My young nephews Freddie, Sidney and Nate, who live in Washington, D.C., are my biggest fans. Seeing the joy in their faces is the main reason I direct shows for children and I think they were the most excited that I won.”

Baron's longtime collaborator Lee Savage, who designed sets for the Lyric Theatre's productions of “Oliver!,” “Ragtime” and “A Christmas Carol,” won a Hayes award for his set design of the Shakespeare Theatre Company's “Much Ado About Nothing.”
