BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (AP) — A coalition of local officials is asking the state for more time to review and respond to proposed regulations for shale gas drilling and hydraulic fracturing, or fracking.

A 30-day comment period expires Friday for revised regulations. Four local leaders including Binghamton Mayor Matt Ryan held a news conference at Binghamton City Hall Monday afternoon. They called for the comment period to be extended to 90 days.

New York state has had a moratorium on shale gas development since regulators began an environmental review in 2008. The Department of Environmental Conservation has drafted permit guidelines and regulations based on the review.

The Joint Landowners Coalition of New York, which backs the drilling industry, dismissed the demand for a longer comment period as the latest in a series of delaying tactics.
