Local Oklahoma food business grows in regular retail space

The seedling that would become Urban Agrarian started five years ago in Matthew Burch's garage, fueled by his passion for eating local. At the time, he used an old Frito-Lay truck powered by used vegetable oil to transport locally grown products to farmer's markets across the metro area.

But the business grew, and customers began asking how to buy more often.

So Burch developed a retail version of a farmers market, with a brick-and-mortar location in the Farmers Market District and regular retail hours, but products that vary depending on the season. The building also contains a commercial kitchen, which is used by food business startups.

“We decided to set up headquarters there and try to be an anchor to bring back the entire district,” Burch said.

The store features staple products like baked goods, pasture-based meats, jams, pickles, relishes and raw local honey as well as a seasonal rotation of produce. Burch has found that some producers prefer working with a store than a farmers market, or they may do both.

“It gives both customers and producers another option and model to work with when it comes to sourcing local food,” he said.

Urban Agrarian also offers a limited delivery service, and is looking to expand that part of the business.
