Boyd's academic specialization is in philosophy of religion and ethics, but his current concentration is on the relationships among world religions and the relation between religion and culture.

Boyd and his wife, Barbara, agreed to be the first OU faculty to participate in the faculty-in-residence program initiated by Boren in 1997.

In 1996, Boyd was named an Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence recipient of the Medal for Excellence in teaching at the college level. In 1995, he was voted professor of the year at OU by the student council.

He holds four degrees, including a doctorate in religion from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn.
