Wake Forest is the most dangerous kind of bowl team. Better than the bowl it fell to, but not rich enough in tradition to not care.
That makes the Demon Deacons a load for Mississippi State in the Music City Bowl.
Wake is just 6-6, but do you know how close the Deacons came to being in the ACC title game instead of Clemson? Wake tied with Florida State at 5-3 for second place in the Atlantic Division, and Wake lost at Clemson 31-28 on Nov. 12 on a last-play field goal. The Deacons led 28-14 late in the third quarter and 28-21 with six minutes left in the game.
Wake's Jim Grobe is as good a pick as any if you're judging on coaches who do the most with the least. Now he's a 61/2-point underdog to a solid Mississippi State team.
Let's go with Grobe's Deacons in the upset.
National Upset Special record: 5-10.
