Looking back at a memorable 2007 season

It wasn’t quite as wild as this college season has been — but the high school football season has certainly had it’s share of twists and turns. Now that it’s over, a look back at some of the top games, performances and moments of the 2007 season:

The top games I saw

  • 1. Tulsa Union 43, Jenks 42 OT

Tress Way’s extra point lifted the Redskins to the win after Union blocked Jenks’ overtime point-after. Union scored 27 fourth-quarter points to climb back in the game.

  • 2. Clinton 21, Kingfisher 16

After having no offensive success in the first half, the Red Tornadoes win yet another state championship, this one ending on Torance McBrayer’s incredible catch from Ryan Stringer with less than a minute left.

  • 3. Westmoore 22, Moore 20

Westmoore jumped to a big lead but couldn’t celebrate a win in the final Moore War until Billy Balak’s pass went out of the reach of receiver Blake Heintzelman on the game’s final play.

  • 4. Bixby 37, Carl Albert 31

Bixby scores 30 of its points in two two-minute bursts to upset the Titans and move on to the semifinals.

  • 5. Guthrie 24, Carl Albert 21

Guthrie got a challenge from the Titans, who shut down Kye Staley. The Bluejays, though, proved they had other weapons in taking the road win.

  • 6. Cascia Hall 20, Heritage Hall 13

Cascia Hall’s defense turns in another dominant performance to give the Commandos the 2A title.

    Top performances

    1. John Brown, Grandfield

Brown ran for 350-plus yards and passed for more than 200 to lead Grandfield to a 54-24 win over Ringwood.

    2. Chris Adkins, Jenks

Adkins ran for 229 yards and scored twice as Jenks avenged their regular-season loss, beating Tulsa Union for its second consecutive state title.

    3. Joey DeGiusti, McGuinness

DeGiusti normally shares carries with Kris Parham, also serving as Parham’s battering-ram of a fullback. Against Wasgoner, though, DeGiusti took center stage with 154 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries in the semifinal win.

    4. Ricky Holba, Morrison

Holba might go down as the best-player ever at Morrison and made a great case with 280 rushing yards on just 11 carries in a semifinal win over Pond Creek-Hunter. Holba also returned an interception for a score.

    5. Kyle Jech, Kingfisher

It might’ve come in a losing effort, but Jech’s 287 passing yards and 39 rushing yards had the Yellowjackets in a position to win the Class 3A title before Clinton’s miraculous drive at the end.

Games I wish I’d seen (playoffs)

    1. Muskogee 19, Norman North 18

After Trae Cook hit Shjuan Richardson for an 80-yard touchdown pass, the Roughers roll the dice and go for two, converting on a Travon Brooks run to take the lead with just over a minute left.

    2. Bethany 19, Alva 18

Nick Chafey hit a field-goal with three seconds left to give the Broncos the win behind J.P. Grasmick’s excellent passing and running performance.

    3. Chandler 35, Seq. Tahlequah 34 (2OT)

Much like the Jenks-Union regular-season game, it was a blocked extra point that made the difference. Marlin Lewis’ partial block sent Chandler to the third round.

    4. Glenpool 7, Broken Bow 6

The Warriors aren’t strangers to defensive struggles — their only regular-season loss came to Bixby 3-0 — and they fought through this one. All of the scoring came in the first half with Broken Bow’s missed extra point proving to be the difference.

    5. Okeene 30, Washington 23

The defending-champion Whippets scored 16 unanswered points in the fourth quarter for an improbable comefrom-behind victory which set the stage for a second consecutive Class A title.

    What’s ahead for champs

6A: Jenks — The Trojans must replace a lot of skill position players, including quarterback Mark Ginther. But Jenks will still be at or near the top of 6A.

5A: Guthrie — Kye Staley will be gone, but running back Clayton Smith and quarterback Keaton Callins will have Guthrie back in the mix.

4A: McGuinness — The Irish look to have the makings of a dynasty. Tight end/defensive end Gabe Ikard and quarterback Ryan Randolph will be back as seniors as the Irish figure to again be the favorites.

3A: Clinton — Clinton is Clinton. They’ll be back with a force as well. And with Kingfisher dropping to 2A, 3A-1 will be significantly less tough.

2A: Cascia Hall — The Commandos figure to be the favorites once again with quarterback Sam Clancy, wide receiver Price Pinkerton and a host of other contributors expected back. Clinton’s gain, though, could be Cascia Hall’s loss, as Kingfisher could be in a position to challenge in 2A.

A: Okeene — Okeene coach Jeff Wardlaw appears to be building a dominant program in Class A. The class, though, is always one of the toughest in the state because of the extra round of playoffs. Class A also gets tougher with the addition of Morrison.

B: Morrison — There definitely won’t be a repeat champion in Class B, with Morrison being forced up to 11-man football. This season’s runners-up, Dewar, are also going up a class, as is Cashion. Pond Creek-Hunter could be the favorite by default.

C: Shattuck — The Indians don’t appear to be letting up in their pursuit of Morrison’s state-record winning streak. Shattuck has won five consecutive titles and will be the prohibitive favorite for a sixth entering next season.
