LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) — A day after telling Louisiana-Lafayette coach Mark Hudspeth he was quitting to take a coaching position at another university, James Willis has reversed his decision and will remain with the Ragin' Cajuns as defensive coordinator.

Hudspeth announced Willis' change of heart Thursday.

Willis says he changed his mind after a night of soul-searching. He says he felt he owed the players more than just one season after they responded so well to the system they put in place that led to the team's 9-4 record and first Sun Belt Conference title since 2005.

Willis also oversaw a young defense that improved from eighth in the Sun Belt in total defense in 2012 to third in 2013.
