LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — The Louisville Convention and Visitors Bureau says more than 12 million people visited Louisville this year, spending some $1.4 billion.

The University of Louisville's Urban Studies Institute came up with the figures based on statistics from the 2011 calendar year. The study was commissioned by the University of Louisville's Urban Studies Institute.

The spending figure of $1,429,240,000 covers the 13-county metropolitan statistical area.

The report says the spending supports about 22,100 jobs with an annual payroll of $382 million.

The report also says state and local governments receive more than $173 million in tax revenues generated by tourism, while Jefferson County Public Schools receive some $2.7 million annually from taxes associated with tourism.
